NAM NEUTRAL HON. PETER B. SKELOS CO-AUTHORS ARTICLE ON MEDIATION AND ARBITRATION IN MATRIMONIAL LAW FOR NEW YORK LAW JOURNAL SPECIAL REPORT
NAM is proud to announce that an article co-authored by Hon. Peter B. Skelos and Stephen W. Schlissel, Esq. entitled “Mediation and Arbitration: Alternatives to Litigation of Matrimonial Matters” has been selected by New York Law Journal as part of its annual Matrimonial Law Special Report and will be published on July 25, 2016.
Authored by two longtime proponents of ADR, the article addresses the use of both mediation and arbitration as a strong alternative to the litigation of matrimonial and family related issues in the courts. With the backlog in the court system, the cost of pre-trial motion practices and discovery and the added benefit of privacy and confidentiality, Judge Skelos and Mr. Schlissel strongly encourage the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution in matrimonial matters. The article states, “working closely with the arbitrator, matrimonial attorneys are better able to exercise control over pre-trial discovery, set a hearing timetable and even set a date by which the arbitrator is to render the award, which they would otherwise not have the autonomy to do.”
Hon. Peter B. Skelos is a former Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, 2nd Department. Hon. Skelos is well-versed in the law and is a highly regarded mediator and arbitrator for NAM having handled a wide variety of case types including construction, commercial, professional liability, insurance coverage, matrimonial, medical malpractice and personal injury matters.
Mr. Schlissel is a matrimonial and family law attorney and is a founding and past-managing member of Schlissel Ostrow Karabatos, PLLC.
