New York, NY (June 9., 2021) – NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation), one of the nation's leading providers of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services, is pleased to announce that NAM neutrals, Hon. Peter B. Skelos (Ret.) and Hon. Marsha L. Steinhardt (Ret.), have been invited by the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers to present a 60-minute CLE webinar, Mastering MedMal Mediations. This complimentary seminar is opened to the public and will be live streamed on Wednesday, July 28th from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET.
Judge Skelos and Judge Steinhardt will be joined by Eleni Coffinas, Esq. of Sullivan Papain Block McGrath Coffinas & Cannavo, P.C.,and Alan J. Fumuso, Esq. of Fumuso, Kelly, Swart, Farrell, Polin & Christesen LLP. The panel discussion will address the best practices for the successful mediation of medical malpractice claims for plaintiff and defense counsel alike.
Topics will include:
- identifying which cases to mediate
- ideal timing for mediation
- client consultation and preparation prior to mediation
- drafting the mediation statement
- oral presentation and negotiations during the mediation
- follow-up if there's no final settlement, and more.

Judge Skelos' career includes 11 years spent as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, Second Judicial Department where he served until his retirement in 2015. Throughout his many years on the bench, he was known for having a keen legal intellect with compassion for those who appeared before him and is rated “Highly Qualified” by the New York State Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission. Judge Skelos' experience both on the bench and in private practice, gives him a broad range of knowledge in numerous areas of the law including construction litigation, professional liability and insurance coverage disputes. In 2020, for the fifth year in a row, Judge Skelos was voted a Top Ten Neutral in the New York Law Journal Best Of Survey and in 2018, for the second straight year, he was named a National Law Journal Alternative Dispute Resolution Champion, as part of a select group of only 46 nationwide. Judge Skelos is also Of Counsel to Forchelli Deegan Terrana LLP.
Judge Steinhardt is a member of NAM's (National Arbitration and Mediation) Hearing Officer Panel. Her remarkable 31-year judicial career includes 26 years spent as a Justice of the Supreme Court. In 2011, she was assigned to the Medical Malpractice Trial Readiness Part (MMTRP), Kings County, where she conferenced every post Note of Issue medical malpractice case in Brooklyn, resulting in the resolution of a significant number prior to trial. Early on, while on the Supreme Court bench, she presided over many case types, including personal injury, product liability, premises liability, and several matters involving complex commercial litigation. Respected by both plaintiffs and defendants alike, Judge Steinhardt is known for her deep understanding of medical practices, processes and terminology that allows her to fully assess and evaluate the issues of the case. Justice Steinhardt is available to arbitrate and mediate cases throughout the State of New York.
