Hon. Larry S. Schachner Author's Article on Arbitration and Mediation for Young Lawyers

“The young advocate would be remiss in not familiarizing themselves with the ever-expanding world of ADR”
– Honorable Larry S. Schachner, J.S.C. (Ret.)

New York, NY (November 26, 2018) – NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation), one of the nation's leading providers of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), is pleased to announce that NAM neutral, Honorable Larry S. Schachner's article, Arbitration and Mediation for Young Lawyers: An Introduction to the Alternative, has been published in the New York Law Journal's ADR Special Report.

In the article, Judge Schachner, a former Justice of the Supreme Court – draws upon his past experiences as a litigator and his current role as a neutral, to address salient points young attorneys should consider for a successful mediation.  He states, “preparation is key – know the file, the liability issues, and the damages.  As a young lawyer, I was once told by a mentor that even if I was not the most experienced lawyer in the room, I should still be the best prepared.”  Judge Schachner also explores how the budding advocate can gain invaluable experience by taking on commercial arbitrations or negligence actions.  He further states, “in addition to servicing as a mechanism by which to resolve cases, arbitrations are a unique opportunity for young lawyers to gain trial experience…sharpen their skills in a variety of areas of trial practice, from opening statements, direct and cross examination, to summations.”

Hon. Larry S. Schachner served as a judge in the State of New York for nearly 20 years. He began his judicial career presiding over New York City residential landlord-tenant cases before being elected Judge of the Civil Court. In 2007, he was appointed Acting Justice of the Supreme Court and in 2014, he was elected as Justice of the Supreme Court.
