Prior to her retirement, Judge McMahon presided over the Differential Case Management Part for both Richmond and New York Counties, overseeing a caseload comprised primarily of medical malpractice cases. In addition, she presided over many nursing home matters that dealt with the public health law. She previously managed the Judicial Mediation, Jury Coordinating Part, Medical Malpractice Discovery, the Foreclosure Residential Conference Part, Foreclosure Auctions, DCM5, and Hurricane Sandy Parts in Richmond County. Her remarkable judicial career includes her service as Administrative Judge of the Supreme Court for Richmond County. For over 15 years, Judge McMahon mentored interns who participated in the Richmond County Bar Association’s summer internship program.
Prior to her time on the bench, Judge McMahon held the position of Court Attorney to Judge Eric N. Vitaliano (now senior Federal District Court Judge, Eastern District), for Richmond County Civil Court, affectionally known as the “People’s Court.” As a result of hearing many cases involving pro se litigants, Judge McMahon developed a compassion and understanding for the concerns of the litigants who appeared before Judge Vitaliano and later, before her. Judge McMahon also served as Principal Law Clerk to the late Supreme Court Justice John Leone. Prior to that, she spent several years volunteering as an arbitrator in Civil Court. In 2003, Judge McMahon was elected to the Richmond County Civil Court. She was soon elevated to Acting Supreme Court Justice and elected to the Supreme Court in 2008.
Earlier in her career, while in private practice, Judge McMahon oversaw a multitude of complex tort litigations, including product liability disputes concerning pharmaceutical drugs, as well as medical malpractice and asbestos litigation. She also handled court appearances at all phases of proceedings and litigated innumerable medical malpractice and personal injury cases to verdict, statewide.
In addition to her distinguished legal career, including her many years on the bench, as a court attorney, and as a trial attorney in private practice, Judge McMahon previously practiced as a licensed pharmacist, working in hospitals and retail pharmacies. She was a member of the Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee and the Commission for the Preparation of the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation, giving lectures to physicians and nurses on the newest medications and their drug interactions.
With over 30 years of service in the court system, Judge McMahon has arbitrated and mediated thousands of matters, including adult survivors, labor law, and personal injury cases. She has also conducted settlement days for major hospitals involving medical malpractice claims. Judge McMahon’s many years of experience, combined with her passion for assisting litigants in resolving disputes, make her an exceptional fit for her new roles as arbitrator and mediator.
Justice McMahon is available to arbitrate and mediate cases throughout New York State.
